Update on hand baggage limits for travel to/from UK, Canada and USA

Due to easing of security measures, following an announcement made by the Department for Transport on September 21, 2006, Alitalia informs all its passengers that revised security restrictions at UK airports will be applied as of September 22, 2006. The revised security measures will allow:

  • An increase in the size of the hand baggage permitted on-board
  • Musical instruments to be taken on-board
Musical instruments which do not fit in the permitted cabin baggage size (maximum length of 56cm, width of 45 cm and depth of 25 cm  (including wheels, handles, side pockets etc.) will be allowed as a second item of cabin baggage, and will need to be screened.
Items still not permitted in cabin baggage:
Drinks: any kind of drinks in any kind of container, although some of these items may be purchased at shops in the departure lounges and taken into the aircraft cabin after security check-points (applicable also to flights to the USA, as of September 26, 2006).
Cosmetics and toiletries: all consumable cosmetics and toiletries (solids, liquids, gels, e.g.: soaps, creams, lipsticks or lip balms, mascara, toothpaste, talcum powder, hairspray and other aerosol items, deodorants, sun tanning products, contact lens solution over 4 oz.).
Food: any liquid-based food products in any kind of container
Writing implements; spare cartridges for fountain pens
Smoking materials; cigarette lighters; non safety matches
For travel to the USA and Canada, passengers may now carry through security checkpoints travel-size toiletries (3 ounces or less) that fit comfortably in ONE, QUART-SIZE, clear plastic, zip-top bag.
Canada inbound passengers  that connect with flights within Canadian territory may not carry onboard liquids, gels and aerosols duty free products, purchased on board of intercontinental flights. They will be confiscated if passengers will continue their journey from any Canadian airport, unless they put them in their registered luggage they should collect and not have tagged to final destination.

Personal use items allowed:
For infants: empty containers such as empty bottles beakers or flasks; baby milk (if tasted by the passenger); sterilised baby water (if tasted by the passenger); baby juice (if tasted by the passenger); baby food in liquid, gel or paste form (if tasted by the passenger); baby food powder (need not be tasted)
Essential Medicines
Medications must be properly labeled with a professionally printed label identifying the medication and manufacturer's name or pharmaceutical label. The prescription medicine must match the name on the passenger's ticket. Diabetic kits needed for the duration of the journey are allowed, as are non-prescription liquid medications (up to 4 oz.) or gel medicines, like cough syrup and gel cap type pills.
Other: Saline solution for contact lenses up to 4 oz. is allowed. Volumes greater than 4 oz. must go in checked baggage.

This easing of restrictions is not a return to normal as the revised regulations will continue to have an impact on airports' operations. Passengers are required to allow extra time for their journey and to arrive at the airport prepared.
Alitalia wishes to thank all its passengers for their cooperation.
