viaggio_bagaglio_registrare_s Checked-in baggage

Baggage to be checked in is weighed at the desk and then stowed in the aircraft’s hold, so it should be strong enough to ensure safe handling and transport.
At the check-in desk, the baggage is tagged with the passenger’s name, route, airport codes, flight numbers and date. The label becomes a sort of identity card. The receipt portion of the label is attached to the passenger’s ticket and is used to identify the baggage on arrival or trace it if mislaid. Passengers must register their baggage to go in hold at time of check-in. Cardboard boxes may be accepted as checked-in baggage as long as each box:

  • bears the passenger’s complete contact information (name, address and phone number);
  • is wrapped in cellophane;
  • does not exceed 30 kgs. for Business class and 20 kgs. for Economy class (see below the "baggage allowance" limits);
  • does not exceed 70 cm. in length, 100 cm. in width and 80 cm. in height.
The transport of televisions, radios, electrical appliances, perishable items such as fish and fruit, alcohol, oil and other liquids is strictly prohibited.

Alitalia’s liability for baggage loss or damage does not cover items that are valuable, fragile or perishable. If you need to extend the coverage, make the declaration value. For more details, see the current regulations.

The cost of baggage transport is included in the price of the ticket, up to the baggage allowance limit. If your baggage exceeds this limit, there is an excess baggage charge which also applies to some special baggage or to items which are declared to be valuable or are over-sized (maximum size: width 42 cm, height 70 cm, depth 40 cm).
The maximum allowed weight for each single piece of checked luggage will be lowered to 30 kgs. for Business class and 20 kgs. for Economy class (see above the "baggage allowance" limits).
Boxes, crates, packages or single items of baggage weighing more than 30 kgs. must be repacked to ensure the maximum weight is respected or sent as cargo.

For security reasons, Alitalia detains the right to check the contents of all baggage (with the exception of diplomatic bags) and to bring in restrictions regarding the transport of certain items. However, many of the items not allowed on passenger flights can be transported as goods, providing they are packed according to cargo regulations.

Hand luggage

You are allowed to carry only one piece of hand luggage onboard which must not exceed the following dimensions (including handles, side pockets and wheels):

Weight: 5 kgs.
Length: 55 cm
Height: 25 cm
Depth: 35 cm

We would also like to remind you about the new overhead lockers that have been introduced on some of our MD80s, in order to offer you more practical storage for your hand baggage.

Personal belongings such as briefcases and portable computers are considered to be hand luggage which you can take onboard in addition to the above. This also applies to crutches and strollers; however these will have to be checked in, labelled and stowed in the hold if there is not enough space on board.
This rule is not applicable for departures from London Heathrow (UK), where only one piece in all is allowed.

For security reasons, you are not allowed to board with potentially dangerous articles such as scissors, cutters, Swiss army-type knives or tools and instruments for agricultural, scientific, sporting or industrial use and the like, nor can you board with any type of imitation or toy firearm.
Furthermore, it is forbidden to take cigarette-lighters on board all flights from Italy to the United States.
