Catania has a rich cultural heritage and is famous for its exceptional University which, having been founded in 1434, is the oldest in all of Sicily. Cathedral Square, with its statue entitled U Liotru, or rather “the elephant” (the symbol of Catania), represents the heart of the city; from here, visitors can follow via Etnea to the magnificent Tondo Gioeni.

Some of the main attractions include the Cathedral of St. Agatha, the Abbey of St. Agatha, the Church of St. Benedict, the Palace of the Elephants (the City Hall building), Palazzo Biscari and Palazzo Toscano, all of which are Baroque monuments that have been included in the Unesco List of World Heritage Sites since 2002, and are mainly concentrated along the Via dei Crociferi, in the city’s center.

Other sites to be enjoyed in Catania include the Roman Theatre, the Amphitheatre, the Achilliane Baths and Ursino Castle.

For a relaxing break, don’t miss out on Villa Bellini, with its classic Italian garden, which was named after Catani’s great composer Vincenzo Bellini and has been recognized as the city’s most renowned public garden since the 18th century.
