A perfect stroll through the snowflakes at the Christmas markets in Europe
DISCOVER THE EUROPEAN CITIES WITH IRRESISTIBLE CHRISTMAS MARKETS WAITING FOR YOU
Lights, aromas and flavors that never go out of style: The enchanting Christmas atmosphere envelops the cities of Europe and breathes new life into them with the Christmas Markets. Typical products, delicacies and decorations of every kind entice passers-by and tourists from exceptional displays and striking city backgrounds that seem to have come straight out of a snowball.
From November 22 until December 22, Piazza dei Signori
A great star, which looks as though it has fallen magically from the sky, adorns the impressive Verona Arena each year and guides visitors to the Santa Lucia markets.
Dozens of artisans and exhibitors welcome curious visitors to their wooden stalls. Festive decorations and garlands adorn the city center streets, while Glühwein (mulled wine), spiced treats such as Lebkuchen and typical German bread delight your nose and warm your throat.
From November 16 until December 24, Rathausplatz
You won't feel the winter cold if you find yourself in one of the most romantic cities in Europe, and to warm your heart think about the aroma of roasted chestnuts, Christmas biscuits and hot punch! This year Vienna has made another date with its Magic of Advent fairytale.
Over a hundred stands circle the trees in the city park, festive and sparkling like swaying moss-colored candles, and offer various ideas for Christmas presents and culinary delicacies of every kind. Make sure you bring the children along too. They can meet ponies who seem to have stepped straight out of an enchanted forest and are ready to take them for a walk in the city.
From November 25 until December 24, Marienplatz
In the shadow of the balcony of Munich's city hall, which lifts the spirits of passers-by every afternoon with Alpine choirs and classical music, little wooden huts open their doors. They are playing their part in what is, along with Oktoberfest, one of Bavaria's most anticipated and popular events. More than a hundred artisans and traders gather around a majestic and sparkling Christmas tree, wrapping presents for all tastes, offering liters of beer and packaging hundreds of kilos of gingerbread for those with more of an appetite. And for a step back in time, not too far from the festive center, an old stage coach towed by horses and driven by a coachman tours the old town every day.
From November 27 until December 22
Joyful traditional melodies ring out from the church bells and festive illuminations brighten the historic center of Frankfurt and the little streets along the Main before and during the Christmas festivities. Sausages and sauerkraut cooked on red-hot braziers under the stars and French fries at any time: the range of treats from central Germany is anything but meagre! With hundreds of chalets scattered between Römerberg, Paulsplatz and Mainkai and unmistakable scents of caramelized apples, toasted nuts and mulled wine leading the way, the Frankfurt Christmas Markets are amongst the biggest in the whole of Germany.
From November 27 until December 22, Hauptbahnhof
Don't be surprised if you see snow falling in Zurich's main train station during the weeks of Advent. In Europe's most famous indoor market, for complete immersion in the Christmas spirit, the Swiss have even provided artificial snow.
Handcrafted products, sought-after Christmas books and glittering jewelry await you amidst the glow of a majestic pine.
Chocolate in every shape and size, gingerbread, nougat, apple fritters, donuts: Hansel and Gretel's paradise is just a few steps from Lake Zurich.
