OLBIA, A PARADISE OF SAND AND SEA

Olbia and Sardinia are the perfect destination for anyone on the lookout for a crystal clear sea, immaculate beaches and natural beauty. The ancient city of Olbia also has a priceless archaeological heritage and boasts numerous traces of the Nuragic civilisation, including the Pozzo Sacro Sa Testa and the Nuraghe Riu Mulinu.

Take a flight from Rome to Olbia and you can also visit the magnificent Emerald Coast, the famous Golfo degli Aranci, the captivating Maddalena Archipelago and picturesque towns like San Teodoro. And when you discover the neighbouring bays of Li Cossi, La Piana, Cala Corsara, Spiaggia Rosa or the wild Cala Moresca, you will truly understand why Sardinia is one of the most coveted summer destinations for tourists from all over the world. Below you can find a few of the things to do during a trip to Olbia.

WHAT TO SEE IN OLBIA

NURAGHI
These mysterious constructions from the Nuragic civilisation are found throughout the lands of Sardinia. Utterly unique, they generally have a conical centre and were built using blocks of overlapping stones. Scholars, who have dated the construction to around the years 2000-1000 BC, are still uncertain of their ancient purpose, though one of the most creditable theories is that they were military buildings and functioned as defensive fortresses. There are around 6,000 in Sardinia: close to Olbia you can visit the sacred well of Sa Testa, the Nuragic fortress of Riu Mulinu and the enormous Tomba dei Giganti.

EMERALD COAST
The Emerald Coast (Costa Smeralda) owes its fortune to the attentions of Prince Karim Aga Khan, who fell in love with this section of the Sardinian coastline and financed the construction of accommodation and restaurants to transform it into an exclusive destination. From the celebrated Porto Cervo to the adjacent Poltu Quatu, not to mention Porto Rotondo and Baia Sardinia, this part of Sardinia is a favourite destination for jet-setters. Here you will be met by enchanting waters, stunning boutiques, luxury hotels and exceptional restaurants, though if you are looking for places more off-the-beaten-track and enjoy alternating beach life with cultural excursions, you can also seek out areas like the untamed Arzachena, which contains monuments and tombs of the Nuragic civilisation.

GOLFO ARANCI
A few kilometres from Olbia you will find this incredible resort, one of the most famous in Sardinia. The name most likely derives from the large number of crabs ('granchi', in Italian) found in this patch of sea, and is famed above all for its extraordinary beaches. There are bays to cater to all tastes, from fully-equipped bathing zones to untamed beaches, with sea beds of the finest sand or hard rock, all enveloped by a crystalline turquoise sea. It is also a paradise for lovers of snorkelling. In addition to the beaches, you can also visit the Capo Figari Natural Park: an extraordinary place that is also a popular destination for marine turtles.

THE MADDALENA ARCHIPELAGO
If you book one of the many organised tours, rent a car or even a sailing boat, from Olbia you can reach the exclusive islands of Maddalena, some of which are completely uninhabited and unspoilt: La Maddalena, Budelli, Caprera, Spargi, Santo Stefano, Santa Maria and Razzoli. Here you will find bays and coves with the whitest sands, but also evocative sea stacks to dive off from. Another paradise for lovers of snorkelling.

WHEN TO GO TO OLBIA

The best time to book a flight from Rome to Olbia for is from May to October, to best enjoy the beaches and sea. The summer season, especially July and August, is also when there are the most festivals and celebrations to encounter Sardinian traditions and immerse yourself in the exclusive nightlife.
