80s

DISCOVER THE ‘80S, A PERIOD OF GROWTH AND CONSOLIDATION FOR THE COMPANY THAT REACHES 10 MILLION PASSENGERS, THE FIRST FLIGHT TO CHINA, NEW UNIFORMS DESIGNED BY RENATO BALESTRA AND THE FLEET RENEWAL WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF THE MD 80.

1980. THE ALITALIA FLIGHT SCHOOL WAS FOUNDED IN ALGHERO
Due to the increasing need for new pilots, Alitalia decided to

create an actual flight school to train its staff. The location was

established in Alghero, in Sardinia, a perfect location for flight

training from a climate and orographic point of view.

1980. THE FIRST FLIGHT TO CHINA

In 1980 the Alitalia network expanded to include China. The first destination was Shanghai.

1982. THE ALITALIA GROUP REACHES 10 MILLION PASSENGERS
In the 1980s the Alitalia Group consolidated its position and reached an important milestone: 10 million passengers

1983. ALITALIA CARRIED THE AZZURRA MAST
In 1983 Azzurra was the first Italian sailing boat in history to take part in the America’s Cup. Italy discovered a “new” sport thanks to the effort of the team headed by skipper Cino Ricci. The team reached the semifinals but was defeated by the English Victory ’83 team. Alitalia took part in the event as the main sponsor for the Azzurra team and carried Azzurra’s 25-meter mast to America.

1984. WELCOME MD80!
In 1984 the McDonnel Douglas Super 80 – the medium-haul twin engine and evolution of the previous DC9 model – entered the Alitalia fleet. At the time Alitalia’s 30-aircraft order was the largest the Long Beach company had ever received.

1986. RENATO BALESTRA DESIGNED THE NEW UNIFORMS
In 1986 Alitalia changed the flight assistants’ uniforms: they were designed by stylist Renato Balestra and were used until 1991. The new style and color tones offered a more classic look: the three-button jacket was blue with a green trim, the skirt – in regimental blue with green stripes – was matched with a green sweater and a white shirt with a collar closed by a blue knot, it also featured a green-and-blue-striped pattern on the sleeve and on the pocket.
