FITNESS TO FLY GUIDELINES
If you need a doctor's permission for air travel, ask your doctor to complete the Medical Information Form (MEDIF) it must be dated not more than seven days before your travel date.
Passengers who suffer from chronic diseases or have physical disabilities may also show a FREMEC (Frequent Traveller Medical Card).
The MEDIF form must be sent to the Call Centre during the booking phase for processing by the Alitalia medical service at least 72 hours before departure, not counting Saturdays and public holidays. If medical clearance is required for the transport of passengers on stretchers, the form, completed in full and signed and stamped by the passenger's attending physician, must be received at least five days beforehand, not counting Saturdays and public holidays.
YOUR OWN WHEELCHAIRS AND/OR OTHER ASSISTIVE DEVICES
When booking your flight, inform the airline of your need to travel with an electric or fold-up wheelchair or any other walking support. You can transport free of charge up to two mobility devices (e.g. wheelchair and walker), as checked baggage in the hold.
Whilst Alitalia do its best to ensure the safe carriage of you mobility devices, there are some safety factors that could prevent carriage. For all the details read here.
To help us in the correct handling of your mobility aid please download the “Powered Mobility Aid information form” and hand it over to the agent or affix it on your mobility aid.
Cause of airports infrastructures in most airports your wheelchair will be tagged and placed in the hold at check-in. You must check it in at least one hour prior to departure for domestic flights, 1½ hours prior to departure for medium-haul flights and 2 hours prior to departure for long-haul flights. If your wheelchair has been stowed in the hold, we will make every effort to return it to you as close as possible to the aircraft door. If this is not possible, we will make sure there is a wheelchair available to assist you to the baggage reclaim area.
We can arrange assistance between the check-in and the gate/aircraft and between the gate and the arrivals hall if you would like this service.
Depending on the airport, this will either be by electric buggy or airport wheelchair.
WHEELCHAIR ON BOARD
All aircrafts of the Alitalia fleet are equipped with wheelchairs on board to assist non ambulatory customer to move to/from the aircraft lavatory. Remember the crew can't give any assistance within the restrooms. Aircrafts of Alitalia partners airlines may not be equipped with wheelchairs on board; you are advised to verify it at the time of booking.
TRAVELLING WITH ESCORT
An Escort is a person who is accompanying a disable passenger. The following categories of passengers are not considered suitable as Escorts:
- Young guests (below the age of 16)
- Physically or mentally impaired person
- Person who are too weak or frail

In order to facilitate movement of our non ambulatory customer between the seat and the wheelchair all Alitalia aircrafts are equipped with movable armrests on aisle seat. If you travels with a carer he/she has a priority in being seated next to you.
Depending on the availability and cases he/she can be seated on the same row or in the row immediately behind or preceding. On domestic and intercontinental flight passengers travelling with service animal are offered bulkhead seat to best accommodate the animal, but no on international flights where the bulkhead are only on Ottima class.
On these flights an aisle seat is proposed.
Unfortunately, for safety reason, no emergency exit row seat can be offered to passengers with reduced mobility.
A stretcher person is an ill or injured passenger who is not able to adopt sitting position required during take-off or landing. Stretchers are available only on economy class on most of Alitalia aircrafts. If you need to travel on a stretcher, you can request this special service when you book your flight.
Make sure to request it well in advance to arrange the service and request a medical authorization to fly.
BLIND AND VISUALLY-IMPAIRED PASSENGERS
A Safety Briefing Card is available for blind and visually-impaired passengers on medium-haul Airbus aircraft.
GUIDE OR ASSISTANCE DOGS
When booking please let us know your need to travel with a guide dog or other assistance dog. We recommend you to use a dog harness and hold a muzzle to be used during the cruise if needed for safety reason on captain request.
The transport of guide or assistance dog is free of charge and not subject to weigh limitation. Please also note that in some countries special regulations apply to the entry of animals and we recommend you to read the rules in advance.

OTHER SERVICES FOR HEALTHY TRAVEL
Find out about the other special assistance services:
- Oxygen therapy for passengers with heart, lung or respiratory conditions to prevent the effects of cabin pressure when the airplane is flying at high altitudes. If you need a carrier oxygen equipment on board you must request it in advance. We can only provide oxygen to one passenger per flight so availability may be restricted. The medical information form needs to be completed by you and your doctor before we can clear you to travel. Alitalia standard continuous flow is 4/ltm. We cannot provide oxygen on the ground at any airports. Contact Alitalia to verify if it is available on the aircraft you are planning to flight with.
- Transporting syringes and medicines on board for personal use: you will need to provide specific documentation and ask for special authorization from the airline when you book your flight
Please alert the cabin crew if you have used any needles during flight so they may provide you with a disposal container. You may not hang intravenous devices from the aircraft overhead; they may interfere with the emergency oxygen mask system.
Medical equipment: Portable medical support equipments are all kind of small size electrical/electronic equipments, powered by battery used for passengers’ medical diagnosis, treatments and surveillance. Inform Alitalia of the need to carry such apparatus as, for safety reason, they are subject to prior approval evaluated on a case-to-case basis by Alitalia Avionic Engineering and Medical Departments.

CONSULT YOUR OB/GYN BEFORE DEPARTURE AND MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL THE NECESSARY DOCUMENTS.
Before embarking on your trip, have your attending physician complete, sign and stamp the Medical Information Form (MEDIF) not more than seven days prior to your departure date.
You will need a MEDIF if:
- You are in the last four weeks of your pregnancy
- You have medical complications related to your pregnancy
- You are having twins
From the start of your ninth month of pregnancy, request a certificate from your doctor that includes your due date.

It is inadvisable to travel seven days prior to and seven days after giving birth and if there is a risk of a premature birth or other complications. If you are traveling with a companion (recommended after the 28th week), request that he/she be seated next to you to assist you throughout your trip.
In flight, do not over-tighten the seat belt and keep it fastened higher than usual.
Promote blood circulation: wear support stockings and massage your legs from time to time. If possible, choose an aisle seat so that you are free to move around. During the flight, drink plenty of water and avoid carbonated beverages.
